John 2, 13-22

Date posted: November 9, 2018

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: John 2, 13-22
Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’ house a marketplace.”
His disciples recalled the words of scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

Reflection
The gospel has shown that once, Jesus has shown his anger which manifested the aspect of him being a man besides being the Son of God. However, the actual lesson in the gospel is beyond that. The reason behind his scolding was that he wanted to correct all the people present in the temple with what they were doing. The people, especially the pharisees, knew that the temple had to be treated with utmost respect yet they still chose to disrespect the holy place. He wanted to reiterate to everyone that the place is the embodiment of God and as a part of God, it is expected for people to give reverence to it.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
According to the Lasallian Guiding Principle, “the spirit of faith enables them to take necessary risks and act with boldness in accomplishing what is demanded by each situation, placing their trust in God’s providence to guide, sustain and make fruitful efforts”. This principle always states that we respect God when we put ourselves out for Him. Respect is not a kind of trust that we give easily and consistently unless we see qualities that are strong, pure, faithful, and serving. God has these qualities and more. He is the quintessence of every good quality, demonstrating them throughout the history of mankind and lovingly revealing them to us personally. He deserves our eager respect, and in order for us to give respect, one way for showing respect is to have faith in Him. God whom we do not fear with religious reverence.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of Kings, You deserve to be praised and respected in all forms for You are our mightiest creator. We ask for Your forgiveness for all the times that we have become disgraceful in thoughts, words and actions in Your presence. We thank You, O Lord, for despite all the stubbornness, You’ve still graced us with all the blessings even though we are unworthy of them. With this, please continue to help us in following the right path, remembering that we are always in Your holy presence, so that we can be worthy to enter Your temple. Amen.
