Luke 14, 25-23

Date posted: November 7, 2018

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 14, 25-23
Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple."

Reflection
God taught His followers to consider carefully the cost of full commitment in teaching about His Word (Ryrie, 1995). We, as Lasallian students and children of Christ, we should be a good example to the people around us. As His followers, we should be ready to give all what we have and do what we can do to glorify and praise Him. Leaving and giving up everything we possess, including our self-interests, without hesitations enables us to fully commit to the Lord and realize the true meaning of discipleship. However, we can’t do this without His Word to guide us which was taught by priests, pastors, and brothers. We can teach what we have learned from the Gospel to share how great our Savior is. After all, teaching is always a great help to everyone.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…the spirit of faith enables them to take necessary risks and act with boldness in accomplishing what is demanded by each situation, placing their trust in God’s providence to guide, sustain and make fruitful their efforts.” In connection to the gospel, if we truly want to be with the Lord, we must not worry about losing all our possessions. The treasure and comfort we are seeking is not on the material things we have, or the family and friends we are with, but on the side of the Lord after we fully commit to Him and be accepted as His disciple. Yes, it can be very difficult to just give up everything we have and we must really take into deep consideration the consequences or the cost. However, if we put our full trust in the Lord, our hesitations will eventually fade and we will realize the beauty it will grant us.

Prayer
Almighty God, we are asking for forgiveness for we have failed Your teaching of not storing treasures here on earth. We became dependent to our material possessions that it made us confused of what really gives meaning to our lives. Today, we ask You to help us move ourselves in finding the path towards Your kingdom and not find the worth of life based on our possessions. We ask You to provide us guidance that may we open not just our eyes and minds, but also our hearts, in using our possessions to help our brothers and sisters by sharing it to them. We ask You, Lord, to increase our faith as we place our full trust in You and drop our reservations and doubts, and as we understand the meaning of discipleship wholly. In the strong and loving name of Jesus, Amen.

Our Lady of the Star, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
