Luke 16:19-25

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Luke 16:19-25
“There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, `Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.

Reflection
This parable is probably the clearest illustration of today’s society – the worldwide gap between the rich and the poor. We live in an affluent society, with large surpluses and great wastage. The media proclaim the desperate need of the starving and homeless. We can even see them in our streets. We can’t plead ignorance of their need, nor of our obligation to come to their aid. In this Lenten season, how can we reach out and help these people in our communities?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “Zeal for service is a whole-hearted giving of oneself to the service of others, in gratuity and generosity, in creativity and fortitude, in compassion and commitment.” To love God with all our heart and to follow Jesus are two important things, according to the gospel, for someone who is committed. True giving is sometimes hurting because we give not just a part of ourselves but our whole heart. As Lasallians, we are challenged to give our whole heart in serving others. Like SJBDLS, may we follow his footsteps in serving the children and his brothers in need.

Prayer for the Year of Ecumenism, Inter-Religious Dialogue and Indigenous Peoples
Almighty, Ever-living God, the most Merciful and Compassionate,
we thank You for Creation and the life You have given us.
Together, we people of diverse religions,
spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions who invoke You by different names,
humbly pray that You give us the opportunity to encounter each other through Dialogue,
to reach mutual respect and reciprocal acceptance of each other,
and to break down the walls of division that stand
at the center of most misunderstandings and conflicts.
Make us instruments of Your Light, Love and Peace.
We make this prayer through the intercession of Mary
Queen and Mother of the Christian Schools, and through
the intercession of Saint John Baptist de la Salle, patron of teachers. Amen.
Our Lady of the Star, pray for us.

St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
