Luke 20:27-40

Date posted: November 24, 2018

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 20:27-40
Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.   “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. The second and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. Finally, the woman died too.   Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to comeand in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ [ a ] He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Reflection
In the gospel, the Sadducees questioned Jesus as they have always tried. This time, the law of Moses about marriage was tried against Jesus. In this time and age, we are only allowed to marry once, and it is sometimes frowned upon to remarry. The vow that has always been used in weddings, “Until death do us part”, reflects Jesus’ answer to Sadducees. In death, our human customs disappear for we “become like angels” as Jesus said. If we are to pass on into heaven, we become like angels, where marriage is basically not applicable for death cannot separate souls that have joined. This passage reminds us that when we pass on, we do not retain our qualities and it is usually left unknown what happens when we die. God in the heavens. This passage also teaches us to never question the Lord, for the human mind cannot fathom some of the Lord’s wisdom.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…the spirit of faith is a spirit that allows one to constantly desire to exhibit manners that are inspiring.” In relation to the gospel, it teaches us that when we get to heaven, we do not retain our earthly qualities even the people we marry. This is because our focus will be set on God and not on the people we shared a life with on earth. So as long as we are here in this world, let us make the most out of everyone and learn to forgive others just like how Jesus forgave us.

Prayer
Dear Lord, as Your child, I fully set my eyes on You. Help me to always look to You even when times of chaos and struggles come. I will put my whole concentration on You and remind myself everyday that I have You and I have Your promises. Help me to love others just like how You love me and so that I may follow the attitude of Christ. Amen.
