Luke 2:22-40

Date posted: February 2, 2019

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 2:22-40
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Reflection
It was a standard among the Jews that the first soon in a family was to be taken to the Temple in Jerusalem. There his parents would make an offering to the Lord to show that the child belonged to the Lord. At that point Simeon favored Joseph and Mary. He likewise disclosed to Mary a portion of the things the future would hold, for her child and for her. He advised her of the significance her child would accomplish, yet he included that distress, like a sword, would pierce her heart. This is the revelation given to Mary. What is God’s revelation to you today?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “Lasallian institutions must strive to develop among its members greater recognition of the realities of human suffering and the stewardship role that each shares in preserving the integrity of God’s creation and creating a humane and just society” (p.20-21). Though the Lasallian schools are now giving opportunities for students to study, still we are called to do our part in the Lasallian mission. We can start by saying “Hi” to familiar faces and even give people hugs when they need. A simple act of kindness means a lot especially to individuals who are hurting. Let us help one another to strengthen our mental and emotional health.

Prayer
Loving Father, help us to do what is good and what is right. Help us choose to give a helping hand rather than judge others. Lord, help us to be understanding of others that we may live in peace and harmony with one another. We also ask for forgiveness because we have not done enough to alleviate the suffering of the the last, the lost and the least. Amen.
Our Lady of the Star, pray for us!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
