Luke 5:1-11

Date posted: February 10, 2019

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 5:1-11
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.
He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.
Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”
Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.”
When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.
They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”
For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”
When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Reflection
In the Gospel, Simon said to Jesus, “”Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” Jesus knowing that these people were looking for answers from what they had conceive as an insoluble problem, he performed his miracle. Although Simon was wearied from a futile night, he wholeheartedly accepted Jesus’ advice to him and thus, they were able to catch fish. This is God telling us that we can achieve more than our own expectations if we follow him and cooperate with his works. One way to understand God’s calling for us, is to see him in our neighbors. Two minds are better than one. Sometimes for us to be the best versions of ourselves as a person and as part of our community, we must learn how to acknowledge other people’s ideas. Like Simon, do you lean to God to know his advice to you whenever there are failures, disappointments, problems coming along your way?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “Every individual needs to be constantly exposed to or immersed in the pressing social problems to which we subsequently aim to contribute a resolution.” (p.22). One of the Lasallian core values is community in mission which is rooted in our communion with God and leads us to relate ourselves to others. According to the 42th General Chapter of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, our Lasallian Mission is to give a human and Christian education to the young, service for the poor and to promote peace and justice in this world accomplished as a shared mission. So, we, Lasallians, are really challenged to work together to bring a humane and fraternal world. When God’s word is spoken his kingdom is revealed and his power is released. When people respond to God’s word with faith and obedience they are changed and made “a new creation” in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Only if we are guided by our communion with God, we are able to do our mission to your community as Lasallians.

Prayer
Prayer for the Tricentenary of the Founder’s passing to Eternal Life (adapted) God, our Father and Mother, You love us with endless mercy. You call us to be your sons and daughters. Give us a generous heart. A heart of flesh that “burns within us.” A heart always willing to love. A compassionate heart for those who suffer. A heart where there is a place for all Lasallians around the world. Lord Jesus, You call us to follow you. Give us the courage to live our commitment. Teach us to go beyond our borders. Teach us to discover you in the lowliest. Teach us to look with the eyes of faith. Teach us to share our mission with all Lasallians of the whole world.Holy Spirit, You call us to live with joy. Fill us with your grace to live the values of the Gospel. Fill us with your grace to be active members in your Church. Fill us with your grace so that we may be credible witnesses, together with the entire Lasallian Family, in the midst of our world. Together and by association, we wish to renew our Lasallian commitment, and, in an attitude of thanksgiving, celebrate these 300 years of life. We ask this through Mary’s intercession, Queen and Mother of the Christian Schools. And through the intercession of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Universal Patron of Christian Educators. Amen.
St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
