Mark 10:2-16

Date posted: October 7, 2018

Gospel: Mark 10:2-16
The Pharisees approached and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.” But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the disciples again questioned him about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

Reflection
In this gospel, Jesus is reminding us this commandment, “That thou shalt not commit adultery.” God made male and female for each other. Their vow in front of the altar is a sacred one. Anyone who breaks it commits adultery. The Church teaches that we can only marry once. This teaches faithfulness of the husband and the wife. They are committed for life. How do we show our commitment?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
In LGP, “…the spirit of faith invites us always to search for God’s will.” Basically, this involves “searching for the best way to carry out God’s saving plan.” (Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echevarria FSC). God’s saving plan is the integral salvation and liberation of all, and especially of those who experience the greatest level of need. Let us all live in the presence of God and follow God’s will. Who we are to disobey the commandments of the Lord?

Prayer
Lord, teach us to commit ourselves to Your mission. We pray that grace of the sacrament of marriage would unite and recreate individuals to become one. Teach us faithfulness. We pray for those who are no longer faithful to their partners. This we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lasallian Prayer for Peace
We pray to you, O Lord,
God of life and God of those who hope!
Listen to our prayer for the whole world:
For peace among all peoples,
For prosperity in all lands.
We pray to you that evil may be overcome
And that all wars may end.
We pray to You especially for the members
Of our Lasallian Family,
Who suffer from war, injustice and intolerance,
And for children and young people who are poor ad neglected.
We pray too, God, for peace in our lives;
In our towns, in our schools,
In our families and in our own hearts.
We pray for a peace that the world cannot give us.
We pray for a peace that will make us whole
And transform us into ambassadors of justice for Your sake.
Lord, give us Your peace! Amen.
Our Lady of the Star, pray for us.
St. John Baptist de la Salle, pray for us.
St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
