Mark 2: 18-22

Date posted: January 21, 2019

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Mark 2: 18-22
Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him,  “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them,  “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

Reflection
When Jesus said “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak” and “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins”, He was referring to the narrow-minded minds of the Pharisees and His’ disciples faith in Him. The Pharisees were too absorbed by their self-righteousness and have made their own new religious rituals. But Jesus’ disciples were under His grace. Are our hearts ready to willingly promise and put our faith in Jesus just like His disciples? Or are we going to be like the narrow-minded Pharisees?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…the communion in mission is a spirit that allows one to respect and affirm the contribution of others to the fulfillment of the mission…” In relation to the gospel, a person’s meaning of faith may vary in any way on how they show their faith but a person who’s faith is all surrendered on God alone would mean a faith that is selfless. The kind of faith that is never ending and strong in the midst of any challenges. These challenges would and might test our faith as a disciple and children of God but as we surrender ourselves and give our whole trust and faith on God, all these challenges would mean nothing. But the kind of faith that is only showed as a representation of one’s strength would mean nothing but selfishness. As a Lasallian our faith symbolizes a powerful love that only God’s grace can give us and through our heart our never ending and unquestionable strong faith to God is reflected and shared. From that faith we view others as our brothers and sisters in which our mission as one starts.

Prayer
Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit, that we may grow in the knowledge of your great love and truth.  Help us to seek you sincerely in prayer and fasting that we may turn away from sin and disobedience and conform our lives more fully to your will. May we always find joy in knowing, loving, and serving you. Let us face our challenges and struggles with hope, knowing that Jesus bears them with us and, in time, will bear us into the new reality he innovates. This we pray, in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
