Mark 6:1-6

Date posted: February 6, 2019

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Mark 6:1-6
Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Reflection
How had Jesus turned out to be so knowledgeable and such a powerful speaker? He was the son of a carpenter, not the son of a rabbi. Numerous individuals in his hometown discounted Jesus and His message. They refused to hear him out. After all, who did Jesus think He was to preach to the people who had known Him from birth? Jesus did not get angry. Rather, Jesus replied to their remarks by saying that normally a prophet is not honoured by the people who have known him from birth. Jesus realized that He simply was too familiar to them. They only saw in Him what they wanted to see. Thus Jesus was unable to perform any great deeds there as they did not have faith in Him. How about you, what can you say about Jesus?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
Communion in mission is one of the Lasallian Core Values. LGP states that “Lasallians must strive to develop stewardship which will be achieved from the togetherness of every member; aiming to render their service and collaboration with one another in order to create a humane and just society.” As a Lasallian, we show our faith by believing the power of the community in mission. We set an example to the people around us that we are mature enough and well guided by the world and principles of the Lord. We take part in the programs that save the lost, the last and the least.

Prayer
Lord, we pray that we may recognize Your presence in the ordinary encounters and notice the ways through which you desire to nourish and give us life. This is because you are present in all things. Free us from prejudices and skepticism. We seek for Your strength to join with You and to open our hearts to know You more. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Our Lady of the Star, pray for us!
St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us!
St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us!
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
