Matthew 12:1-8

Date posted: July 19, 2019

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 12:1-8
At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Reflection
The Pharisees during the time of Jesus followed the law to be recognized as scholars. They also judge other people as those who will not be saved because they do not know the law. But for what purpose God gave us the law? We follow the law because we want order. In achieving order we need to understand the real spirit of the law not the letters of the law. We do not use the law to degrade or underestimate other people. We follow the law to uplift the life of the poor and underprivileged not to judge them. The Gospel invites us to walk in the ways of Jesus, that is, the way of mercy and justice.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, lasallians must act to eliminate forms of human suffering that contradict God’s plan of fullness of life. To follow the way of Jesus, St. John Baptist D e La Salle tried to eliminate the suffering of the children of France through education. He drafted rules and regulations not to undermine the people entrusted to his care but to lead them to righteousness. The call to all lasallians is to be more humane in the implementation of rules in the schools. We should remember that our founder himself had a heart patterned to the loving and merciful heart of Jesus.

One Commitment Prayer
Lord Jesus, You love us all and make us your brothers and sisters. You call us to follow you. You invite us to announce the Good News. Lord, grant us the courage to live our commitment. Teach us to go beyond our borders. Teach us to discover you in the lowliest. Teach us to see with the eyes of faith. Teach us to share our mission with all Lasallians throughout the whole world. We make this prayer through the intercession of Mary, Queen and Mother of the Christian Schools, and through the intercession of St. John Baptist de la Salle, patron of teachers. Amen.
Our Lady of the Star, pray for us.
St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
