Matthew 7:21, 24-27

Date posted: December 6, 2018

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 7:21, 24-27
21  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 24  “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  25  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  26  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  27  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Reflection
Do we really know what true discipleship is? Today’s Gospel reading reminds us of what true discipleship means. People often confess that they have not said their morning and evening prayers or that they have not been to Mass. Perhaps they should remember the words of today’s Gospel: "It is not those who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, who will enter the kingdom of heaven…” On the other hand, those of us who always do say our morning and evening prayers and never miss a Mass also need to remember them. Something more is needed than just being a prayer. What is needed is that we “do the will of the Father”. It is that we be filled with the spirit of the Kingdom and work to make that Kingdom a reality in our world. It involves constant outreach beyond ourselves. We have to go to God by finding him present in the world around us and helping others to be aware of that loving presence also. We will not do that by piously calling on God’s name while ignoring the needs of our brothers and sisters. To do that is to build our house on sand.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…communion as a way of accomplishing mission suggests the solidarity and collaboration that come from sharing in one vision, one spirit and one mission.” As we nurture ourselves as individuals, we should not forget to nurture ourselves as God’s children. Everyday we are called to serve and we have to answer that calling. Faith without action and deed is empty faith. As God’s children, we are called to serve our neighbors especially the poor, the outcast, the forgotten and the sick. Uniting with our brothers and sisters from the community having the same goal: to do the will of the Father and to serve the community.

Prayer
Eternal God, I thank you for choosing me to be your disciple and for the gift of your son, Jesus.
Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel by word and by deed today and everyday.
Open my heart to the outcast, the forgotten, the lonely, the sick and the poor.
Grant me the courage to think, to choose, and to live as your servant, joyfully obedient to God.
Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
