Matthew 8:5-11

Date Posted: December 3, 2018 | 7:00 am

Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 8:5-11
When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.   I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven”.

Reflection
How deep is your faith in God?
Despite of being superior and dominated to people, the Centurion personally went to God with faith and asked for his servant’s healing. He could just send one of his underlings to God. But he chose to ask God personally with goodness and believes that the word of God is capable of healing. Aside from Centurion’s deep faith in God, we learn how to deeply care for other people like how the centurion was concerned in his servant, no matter who they are, regardless of their position in our society. We are all human and God’s children, we are all equal in his eyes. How many of us care for the people who are poor and neglected by our society? How many of us care for our servants? Would we still care for them if they no longer serve us anymore?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…communion as a way of accomplishing mission suggests the solidarity and collaboration that come from sharing in one vision, one spirit and one mission.” In connection with the gospel, Jesus was amazed by the faith of the centurion for it did not only come by reading the doctrine but for believing and acting on the word of Jesus. As a way of relating to others, being able to disclose yourself to other people especially for the poor and in need is a way to be part of the mission by which the first Lasallian Brothers bonded together. We should always have our helping hands open to anyone regardless of their standing in the society. “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you” (John 15:12).

Prayer
Lord, I come to You today not by asking for any request that will benefit only myself but for giving thanks to the attributes and qualities I see that lived out so well in some people as a reflection of Your own goodness. I know that there is much to learn from other people who, in some way, reflect your likeness in different ways. Always inspire me to respect other people as we are equals, love and see them the way you do the same for them. This we pray, in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
