Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that utilizes non-ionizing radiation, unlike X-rays or CT scans. An MRI scanner is comprised of a strong magnet producing specific pulses, received by a computer, which are then transformed into valuable diagnostic images. This technology allows image acquisition in multiple planes without repositioning the patient. Today, a 1.5 Tesla MRI is considered as the standard for cutting edge imaging.

The new 1.5 Tesla MRI system at the De La Salle University Medical Center provides amazingly clear and vivid images with superior soft tissue contrast than X-rays or CT scans. Thus, it makes it ideal for imaging the brain and spine, joints and small bones and other soft tissue body parts where the minute details are especially crucial to diagnosis.

Angiographic images can be obtained without the use of contrast material, unlike the CT or conventional angiography. A 1.5 Tesla machine is also ideal for chest and abdomen MRIs. Advanced techniques such as diffusion, spectroscopy and perfusion allow for precise tissue characterization rather than merely ‘macroscopic’ imaging.

De La Salle University Medical Center is the only hospital in the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite equipped with a 1.5-Tesla MRI housed in its newly expanded center. De La Salle University Medical Center also has a 0.2 Tesla MRI.
