On June 5, 33 participants from DLSHSI’s College of Pharmacy, Lasallian Mission and Linkages Division, Institutional Planning and Development Office, and ESMU joined other volunteers in the Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge 2015 held at GK Bayanihan Village, Brgy. Sampaloc 3, Dasmarinas City Cavite.

The Bayani Challenge is a three-day event in GK communities where the main goal is encourage communities to put faith into action, loving enough to truly care and being brave to build hope for building better and healthier communities.

GK’s Executive Director, Louis Oquinena told the volunteers that the driving force of the GK Bayani Challenge is to teach each other the value of generosity. “We do something that we believe is good for the other person; this what generosity is all about. Dream for a future where no one is hungry, where no one is homeless and no one is landless,” he said.

During the Bayani Challenge, the DLSHSI Volunteers planted 50 fruit bearing trees that they will visit and take care of it. Dean Alicia Catabay, of College of Pharmacy who is one of the volunteers shared: “We are given an opportunity to show other people that we can help even in small things. Students learn that even if they are just students, they can still help. Helping is not by age, the status in life, whether we walk or not because every one of us can help in the effort to end poverty.”
