CHED declares May 18 as National Higher Education Day

Philippine President Rodrigo R. Duterte has signed Republic Act 11522 declaring May 18 as National Higher Education Day in commemoration of the founding anniversary of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), which is the national body mandated to “formulate and recommend development plans, priorities, and programs on higher education (Philippine News Agency, 2021).” Government offices, public and private higher education institutions, private employers and industry partners are directed to participate in the CHED-initiated activities and events in observance of National Higher Education Day.

DLSMHSI students undergo TOEIC® certification

Students of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences take TOEIC® (Test of English for International Communication) as part of DLSMHSI academic requirements for the course and in compliance with CHED Policies, Standards and Guidelines on Speech and Language Pathology Education (CHED Memorandum Order No. 59, 2017). TOEIC assesses the English proficiency skills of students in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Test questions are based on real-life work settings in an international environment (meetings, travel, telephone conversations, etc.).

The test is administered to BS Physical Therapy and BS Occupational Therapy students during the second semester of the second year level. Students who fail to obtain a Working Proficiency Score shall undergo a remediation program to be facilitated by Educational Testing Service free of charge. This is a personalized program depending on the acquired test taker score.

TOEIC® is administered to screen BSSLP applicants at DLSMHSI. A test taker must obtain a grade of 830 or above in the TOEIC® Listening and Reading Tests and a score of 310 or above in the TOEIC® Speaking and Writing Tests to be admitted in the program. A test taker who fails to meet the required scores may retake the examination until cut-off grades are met. The applicant must undergo the standard application process and pay the incurred amount of the Test Part to be retaken.

The Center for Internationalization, Academic Affiliations and Engagements through the Language Training and Professional Development Unit coordinates the administration of TOEIC® examinations in partnership with CRS. A total of 215 BSPT and BSSLP students took the examination on March 13 and 14, 2021 online through the supervision of Hopkins International Partners, Inc.
