DLSMHSI approves Dr. Gonzales’ Professor Emeritus Award

The De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute has approved the granting of the Professor Emeritus Award to Dr. Eduardo G. Gonzales for his exemplary performance and contribution to the field of Histology and to the Philippine medical education. Dr. Gonzales taught as a permanent full-time faculty of the College of Medicine for 37 years with the rank of Professor 15 until his mandatory retirement in 2016. He has been appointed as a Fixed Term Faculty (Full-time B) since 2016.

Dr. Gonzales’ teaching career started in 1975 when he taught at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine until 1979. He transferred to then Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine, now DLSMHSI College of Medicine. He was the first faculty member to obtain the rank Professor 15 in 2007, which was based on the merits of his teaching and scholarly work. He was the first recipient of the Most Distinguished Faculty Award in 2016.

His work in the Philippine medical education involved the development of the MD course of the innovative stepladder curriculum of the UP-Institute of Health Sciences (UP-IHS) in Tacloban City in 1978, the conceptualization of the Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine in 1979, the development of the Centro Escolar University School of Medicine in 2015 and the planning of the medical school for Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City as part of the UP College of Medicine-WHO project.

Dr. Gonzales has actively contributed to medical curriculum innovations. He developed the BS Human Biology with DLSU Manila, a pre-medicine course that allows qualified students to finish the course in two (2) years. He also pushed for the integration of computer-based learning materials in teaching histology and other medical subjects. This led to the offering of Health Informatics subject (a first among Philippine medical schools), establishment of the Department of Health Informatics, set up the Health Informatics Laboratory and the introduction of digital histology course (another first among Philippine medical schools).

As an active researcher, Dr. Gonzales has published numerous books, manuals, and journal articles, including a weekly newspaper column. He is the co-author of Esteban and Gonzales’ Textbook of Histology, which was used as a reference book of many educational institutions.

He held various administrative and management positions as an educator and administrator in DLSMHSI.

The conferment of the said award shall be held this August 2021 during the opening ceremonies of the College of Medicine for SY2021-2022.


Academics takes pride of its faculty and student achievements 

College of Medicine Dean Dr. Madeleine Grace M. Sosa received a study grant to attend Leadership in Medicine: Southeast Asia Program in Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. This is a distance education leadership and management course conducted in a blended and interactive learning platform with participants from Southeast Asia.

College of Rehabilitation Sciences Dean Dr. Ma. Elizabeth V. Rey-Matias and College of Medical Laboratory Science Faculty Ms. Amapola DG. Puaso have been selected to attend the International IPE Training at Gunma University, Japan. Out of the 38 applicants, only 23 were selected. The selection process was based on affiliation, current state of interprofessional education (IPE), and the expected impact of participation on education. The participants shall attend workshops, lectures and discussions about overview of IPE, current state and future issues of IPE, simulated IPE training based on case scenarios and evaluation methods for IPE outcomes.

The paper Associated Factors Related to Vaccine Hesitancy and the Intention to Vaccinate their Children Among Mothers authored by College of Pharmacy Faculty Mr. Louie Fernand D. Legaspi and thesis advisees has been accepted for publication in the upcoming May-August 2021 issue of Journal of Public Health and Development (a Scopus indexed journal).

College of Pharmacy Faculty Mr. Richard L. Pineda was certified as Pharmacy immunizer by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on April 5, 2021 through a formal ceremony of the Philippine Pharmacists Association via Facebook Live.


DLSMHSI clinical clerks develop COVID-19 IEC learning materials

The January 2021 batch of clinical clerks assigned in Brgy. Baliwag, Magallanes, Cavite developed a video material on COVID-19, which was presented during the Barangay General Assembly on March 20, 2021 and streamed via FB Live. The barangay captain, Hon. Jacinto Andora, acknowledged the partnership of the community with DLSMHSI for almost 6 years, which contributed to the health and well-being of the community members. Aside from the video, tarpaulins about COVID-19 were also developed and displayed in front of the Barangay Health Center and Barangay Hall.

CIETI and PBRM conduct online Written Rehabilitation Medicine Specialty Examination

The Center for Innovative Education and Technology Integration and Philippine Board of Rehabilitation Medicine (PBRM) Board of Examiner conducted the online Written Rehabilitation Medicine Specialty Examination on April 11, 2021 via iLS.Cloud and Webex. The examination was confirmed successful by the Board of Examiners during the deliberation held after the written examinations. There were 22 physicians who took the examination.
