Matthew 23:13-22

Date posted: August 21, 2022

August 22, 2022 (Monday)
Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Matthew 23:13-22
‘But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in
yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea
and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. ‘Woe to you,
blind guides, who say, “Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the
sanctuary is bound by the oath.” You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold
sacred? And you say, “Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.” How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? So whoever
swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one
who dwells in it; and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it.

Reflection
The Gospel reminds us that as persons of influence, power and authority is not for maligning the poor and the needy. Jesus warns the Pharisees and the scribes for their hypocrisy for they do not practice what they preached. Do I use my position for personal gains?

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “Actions must always be life-affirming.” As Lasallians, we are asked not be like hypocrites, like the scribes
and the Pharisees who wore masks. We are called not to mislead persons and pretend to be something that they are not
supposed to be instead leading the person to what is true and live according to the teachings of Jesus. Let us allow
ourselves as heralds of the truth especially in this trying times.

Prayer
Synod on Synodality Prayer
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us, Make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.
All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.
Amen.
St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
