De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, in communion with other La Salle schools participated in the commemoration of the 2018 International Lasallian Days for Peace (ILDP), a month-long peace awareness campaign celebrated from September 21 to October 21.

In line with the theme “Ignite our Hearts of Peace!” DLSMHSI’s Lasallian Formation and Social Action team held various activities to give Lasallians here many opportunities to see how they can push forward the advocacy for peace. Among the most popular was the Lasallian Peace Arts activity where students expressed their idea of peace through artworks, guided by the theme “300 years of Igniting Our Hearts of Peace,” a nod to the commemoration of
our Founder’s tercentenary.

A forum with the topic “We are Walking Peace Poles: Living Out the Beatitudes” was also held on October 6, 2018. Through this forum, the participants were enjoined to deepen their advocacy for peace, non-violence, tolerance, the integrity of creation by actively supporting education and public awareness efforts, and participating in formations and interfaith peace prayers.

The forum’s guest speaker, Genevieve Balance-Kupang, Ph.D., vice president of The Mandala Peace Arts Initiative, Inc. extolled the importance of finding peace within ourselves. “It is good to do resolutions, do public policy so that things can get better. But it is also important to recognize the centrality of peacemaking within ourselves. We cannot say “peace” if we ourselves do not release our internal burdens because if we are filled with hatred, it will show in our face. It can show in the way we act and interact with others. Even peace comes when we have a listening ear to a classmate in need, and to our family,” she emphasized. She added that it is also important to build a culture of respect, solidarity, and living in harmony with the earth, by promoting human rights and responsibility to our environment.
