Luke 11:29-32

Gospel: Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Reflection
The Gospel today reminds us of our need to live by faith and not to depend on signs and wonders. The crowd demanded a sign from Jesus before they would believe in him. He tells them no sign will be given them except the sign of Jonah.
Jonah was a reluctant prophet. He didn’t want to preach to the Ninevites, not because he was afraid he would be rejected, but because he was afraid his enemies would repent. Jesus is far greater than Jonah, because he is God himself. If the Ninevites repented at the preaching of Jonah, the crowd should have been moved to repentance even more by the Word made flesh.
Let’s not be like the crowd who demands signs before we believe. Let’s not be like Jonah who feared sinners would repent and be saved. We need to strongly denounce sin. At the same time we must love sinners.

Lasallian Guiding Principle
LGP states that, “…the spirit of faith is a spirit that allows one to trust in God’s loving presence and providence when acting God’s will.” We have a purpose which is to do the will of God. Therefore, we should call and gather everyone to imitate His way of doing things and continue His salvation. Without God we cannot do anything. As Saint De La Salle said, “that God in His providence has established the Christian Schools”. Meaning to say, God will be here whatever you do. As Lasallians, we should trust in God and preach the truth, the way, and the life.

Prayer
Forgiving, merciful God, we pray to You for a good measure of humility and honesty to acknowledge before You and people that we are weak and fallible men and women, who often try to turn a blind eye to our shortcomings and our sins. Strong with the grace won in the hard way by Your Son on the cross, we beg You for the courage to seek Your forgiveness and to turn and return wholeheartedly to You and to serve You and people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lasallian Prayer for Peace
We pray to you, O Lord,
God of life and God of those who hope!
Listen to our prayer for the whole world:
For peace among all peoples,
For prosperity in all lands.
We pray to you that evil may be overcome
And that all wars may end.
We pray to You especially for the members
Of our Lasallian Family,
Who suffer from war, injustice and intolerance,
And for children and young people who are poor ad neglected.
We pray too, God, for peace in our lives;
In our towns, in our schools,
In our families and in our own hearts.
We pray for a peace that the world cannot give us.
We pray for a peace that will make us whole
And transform us into ambassadors of justice for Your sake.
Lord, give us Your peace! Amen.
Our Lady of the Star, pray for us.
St. John Baptist de la Salle, pray for us.
St. Miguel Febres Cordero, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
