DLSUMC Celebrates national patient safety days

Patient Safety is a global public concern.

According to the World Health Organization, out of the 421 million annual hospitalizations in the world, an estimated 42.7 million are adverse events that occur in patients during hospitalization. These latest data show that patient harm is the 14th leading cause of the global disease burden, comparable to diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria.

Thus, World Health Organization’s Global Safety Challenge in 2017 aims to reduce the level of severe, avoidable harm related to medications by 50% over the next five years and has urged all medical professionals and institutions to be true to the oath to pratice medicine without harm.

In response to this challenge, De La Salle University Medical Center’s National Patient Safety Office spearheaded
activities in a three-day celebration on June 25-27, 2018 that would raise awareness on patient safety issues, guided by the theme, “DLSUMC is where Patient Safety comes first because the patient is our family.”

Vice Chancellor for Hospital Operations Dr. Roberto Espos Jr. in his opening message shared that paramount in their efforts toward JCI accreditation is the improvement of the quality of healthcare services at DLSUMC. And he emphasized that the
cornerstone of this goal is patient safety. He also shared that during his recent participation in the International Association of Lasallian Universities (IALU) conference, he learned that Lasallian education and services are without limits. “Lasallian education is without limits. How do I apply that to the hospital? We will exert all our efforts to make our patients safe. Without limits. We will involve everybody in the hospital and I expect everybody to cooperate to ensure that our patients are safe. And it’s not only our patients, but all of us, should be safe.”

And these efforts are already bearing some fruit. Senior Patient Safety Officer, Zara Louise Fernandez-Abilar reported that in the past year, they noted an increasing awareness among DLSUMC staff of the value of reporting patient safety issues. Thus, they gave Patient Safety Awards to the units that have voluntarily reported incidents. The Medical ICU took the first place and received a cash award of P10,000 while 1400 Nursing Unit took the 2nd place and received P5,000.
