AGAP 4: How we benefit from serving the poor

June 1, 2018 | 9:16 am

When we zealously pursue our Lasallian mission of preferential option for the poor, we usually think of beneficiaries as those who receive the free service. What about those who provide the service? Is the benefit truly only one-sided?

The answer can’t be “no,” opined Br. Raffy Reyes FSC, who spoke to DLSHSI administrators during the May 24
Administrators’ General Assembly with the President (AGAP) held at De La Salle Villarosa Convention Hall.

Quoting Bishop James Lyke, Br. Raffy enumerated the ways by which the materially poor evangelize those who altruistically serve them. “The poor can open our eyes to the needs, the injustices they suffer and to the sinful structures and the systems which oppress them. And the poor calls us to a greater faithfulness to the Gospel, to a deeper spirit of sharing, generosity, hospitality, service, a greater sense of simplicity. Thus, by helping, we grow in our understanding of human suffering, the poor can raise our minds and hearts to the social dimension of the Christian message,” he said.

“This is why the Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle encouraged the Brothers to “look below the rags of the poor
children and see the Christ-child lying in the manger,” Br. Raffy continued.

The quarterly AGAP is an opportunity for DLSHSI’s administrators to partake of lessons from the Founder on how to pursue the Lasallian mission so that DLSHSI can better serve its community. During this quarter’s assembly, the focus was on the value Zeal for Service and also featured College of Pharmacy Dean Alicia P. Catabay RPh, MSc, Ph.D. who spoke about the many ways the Lasallian community can find opportunities to do meaningful service
for the community.

During the assembly, DLSHSI’s Academic, Hospital, Research, Lasallian Mission and Linkages, and Administration
& Finance divisions also gave the community a status update of their stated objectives for school year 2017-2018.
