It’s another GOLD for the College of Medicine!

DLSHSI’s College of Medicine notched more golden feats in another international competition!

 

The new awards are due to the impressive performance of its delegates to the 2nd year of the Khon Kaen University International Challenge of Emergency Medicine and its Basic Sciences (KKU ICEM) held on March 30 – April 3, 2017 in Khon Kaen, Thailand.

 

DLSHSI-CM students Kurl E. Jamora bagged the gold medal as the top scorer in the elimination round, Joanna May S. Quilacio, Juan Paolo M. Austria, and Zoe Caitlin Z. Fernandez obtained silver medals, while Roxanne M. Figueroa, Janika Adrienne L. Balane, Emmanuel A. Gutierrez and Ryan Michael B. Villar obtained bronze medals. Team A from DLSHSI- College of Medicine emerged as champion in the Quiz Bee competition, while Team B reached the semifinal round. Srinakharinwirot University, Chang Mai University and Khon Kaen University earned the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner up spots respectively.

 

Two teams from Batch 2017 represented DLSHSI. Team A was composed of Kurl E. Jamora, Joanna May S. Quilacio, Roxanne M. Figueroa, Juan Paolo M. Austria, while in Team B were Zoe Caitlin Z. Fernandez, Janika Adrienne L. Balane, Emmanuel A. Gutierrez, Ryan Michael B. Villar. Dr. Michael Nicholaus Q. Van Haute and Dr. April B. Llaneta served as advisers for the two teams. They competed with 23 other teams from different universities across 8 countries namely: Muhammadiyah University (Indonesia), University Sains Malaysia (Malaysia), International University (Cambodia), Chang Gung University (Taiwan), Southern Medical University, Zhejiang University, and Sun Yat Sen University  (China), Wakayama Medical University (Japan) and Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, Vajira Hospital, Navamindhradhiraj University, Prince of Songkla University, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and Srinakharinwirot University (Thailand).

 

KKU ICEM is an annual event created to connect those who are interested in Emergency Medicine. The competition included basic sciences and clinical knowledge and skills in the field of emergency medicine. The scope of the competition included emergency cases in the areas of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Mass Casualty Management, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Toxicology and Pediatrics. Related basic sciences such as Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Anatomy were also included. Types of exam questions in the competition were Multiple Choice Questions and a moving exam in the elimination round; short answer in the semifinal round, and OSCE and scenario oral examination in the final round.

 

The event aims to establish Khon Kaen University’s faculty of medicine as an academic exchange center in Emergency Medicine for international medical students, to encourage connection between international medical students who are interested in Emergency Medicine, and to raise awareness on the importance of Emergency Medicine. The recognition of Emergency Medicine as a vital field is an important endeavor for KKU ICEM.

 

It is in the fast-paced realm of Emergency Medicine where physicians are first in line to see and treat cases that need immediate medical attention. An accurate diagnosis can save a life, while a simple mistake can lead to the worst possible outcome. Hence, Emergency Medicine must be recognized as a vital field. Despite its importance, Emergency Medicine is sometimes not included as a subject in the medical curriculum.

Balane, Emmanuel A. Gutierrez, Ryan Michael B. Villar [Team B]. Dr. Michael Nicholaus Q. Van Haute and Dr. April B. Llaneta served as advisers for the two teams. Fernandez obtained silver medals, while Roxanne M. Figueroa, Janika Adrienne L. Balane, Emmanuel A. Gutierrez and Ryan Michael B. Villar obtained bronze medals. The quiz bee competition was concluded with Team A from DLSHSI- College of Medicine emerging as champion, while Team B reached the semifinal round. Srinakharinwirot University, Chang Mai University and Khon Kaen University earned the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner up spots respectively.
