Senior High Students turn “Japanese” in exchange program
June 1, 2018 | 9:06 am
It is when we immerse ourselves in other cultures that we better understand differences across cultures and appreciate our uniqueness. This perspective is what results in us finding better ways to work and live with people from different cultures that make this world a better place to live in for everyone.
A select group of our Special Health Sciences Senior High School students had such an experience when they spent three weeks of immersion at various locations in the Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan from April 11 to May 1, 2018.
During their immersion, the 15 grades 11 and 12 students, who were accompanied by three of their teachers from DLSHSI, experienced not only Japan’s high school education but also their health system and culture. They attended regular high school classes in various subjects such as English, Welfare, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, and History.
The students also visited the Houei Group’s residential care facility for the elderly in the Miyazaki Prefecture. They also went to the Niko Niko ‘Smile’ Day Care where the students helped the nurse and physical therapist on duty in their daily tasks like taking vital signs, exercises, and recreational activities.
Students also visited the elderly residents of Houbouen Day Service, the first nursing home facility established by the Houei group there, where they assisted the elderly in their daily activities like calligraphy, tea time, exercise, and daily walks outside the nursing home.
Another highlight of the program is the cultural immersion where they visited Takachiho Farm, Sakurajima Volcano, Kambashira Shrine, and Houshin School of Health Care. They also learned basic Japanese alphabet, origami making, how to properly wear a Kimono, and met Daiichiyouchien kindergarten pupils.
This study program is part of the agreement between DLSHSI’s Special Health Sciences Senior High School and Miyakonojo Higashi High School for academic, professional and cultural exchange. Miyakonojo Higashi High School is a secondary school that provides healthcare, automotive, business, and general courses located at Miyazaki Prefecture in the region of Kyushu, Japan.
